Duterte appoints Vicente Danao as acting PNP chief

Four days before the May 9 election, President Rodrigo Duterte appointed PLt. General Vicente Danao as acting chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“The President has just designated Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr as Officer-In-Charge of the Philippine National Police to replace Gen. Dionardo Carlos, who is retiring ?on 08 May 2022,” said DILG Secretary Eduardo Año.

Danao will replace PNP Chief Gen Dionardo Carlos, who will retire on May 8 after reaching 56. Carlos has only been PNP chief for six months, while Danao will likely serve as PNP chief until August 2023.

Año explained that since the election is imminent, the President can no longer appoint a permanent PNP chief, as stipulated in the Constitution.

Año, on the other hand, is confident that Danao will be able to fulfill the role assigned to him by the President because he is “very capable,” “workaholic,” and a “man of integrity.”

Año also instructed Danao to ensure that the election would be peaceful, orderly, and honest.

Danao has been with the Philippine National Police for over 29 years and has served as Chief of the National Capital Region Police Office from 2020 until 2022, deputy director for operations of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, as task force commander under the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs, and as chief of police in two cities and two regions. His most extended term as police chief was between October 2013 and June 2016 in Davao City.

In October 2013, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte appointed Danao as the city’s new police chief, succeeding Ronald dela Rosa. He was transferred to Quezon City after being appointed as the head of the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group. He revived his predecessor’s Oplan Tokhang program to address the city’s persistent drug problem.

In September 2014, Vicente Danao was involved in a domestic abuse controversy with his wife, Susie Danao. Danao was temporarily suspended when videos of him assaulting his wife went viral on social media, prompting a complaint and a temporary suspension. One month later, he was reinstated to his post after an investigation found him not guilty.
