DOJ Sec. Remulla admits he underwent heart bypass surgery

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced that he underwent heart bypass surgery when he took a 10-day wellness leave. Despite this, the secretary said that he would not resign from his job.

In a media briefing this Thursday, Remulla shared that his bypass surgery lasted seven hours on June 27. It was said that the procedure was performed when a blockage in the vein in his heart was found when he underwent a physical examination a week before.

“At ngayon, I’m undergoing physical rehabilitation sessions. Kasi kapag na intubate kayo, hihina ang baga. At saka marami akong kahinaan ng katawaan, kaya nag a-ano po ako, I’m doing physical therapy,” he said.

“Okay naman [I’m fine]. So far so good. My voice is very clear, my mind is very clear,” he assured.

When asked if he was considering resigning because of his health, Remulla replied, “Never.”

“I serve at the pleasure of the President. And I will continue to discharge my functions as long as the President believes in my capability to lead the department,” he explained.

He is said to have spoken to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and advised him to be strong.

“He’s very happy that I made the decisions that I did to go through the procedure and to come out of it very well. And I thank the President for the trust,” said Remulla.

According to the secretary, he will return to work “technically” on Monday but cannot yet go to his office every day.

“I will be meeting the leadership on Monday. A lot of Usecs, Asecs, I’ll be meeting on Monday morning after the flag [ceremony] para sa instructions, para magkaroon ng mga direction, mga orders na kinakailangan,” said Remulla.

From 2019 to 2022, he was the representative of Cavite’s 7th district, a position he previously held from 2010 to 2013, and he was also the House Senior Deputy Majority Leader.

From 2016 to 2019, he was the provincial governor of Cavite, and from 2004 to 2010, he represented the province’s 3rd district. He also hosts “Executive Session” on DZRH radio. Remulla is an outspoken opponent of ABS-CBN and was one of the 70 congressman who voted to deny ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal.
