DOH denies new COVID wave in NCR

On Thursday, the Health Department refuted rumors of a fresh COVID-19 surge in the NCR, providing statistics that indicated a decrease in national cases during the holidays.

The Department of Health reports a decline in new COVID-19 infections, with 3,147 cases recorded and an average of 449 per day from Dec 26, 2023 to Jan 1, 2024. This is a 10% decrease from the previous week’s 501 daily average and 3,507 total cases.

The report also mentioned that out of the fresh cases, just 40 of the 128 are in a severe or critical condition.

“Our data shows the continuous low transmission and mild presentation of COVID-19 locally,” DOH said in a statement.

Regarding hospital data, the Department of Health noted that the amount of full ICU beds for COVID-19 cases stayed at a minimal 12% from November to December 2023, with a high point of 16% in that timeframe.

At its peak, only 19 regular beds were in use, with the average usually around 17.

“Our data also shows a consistently low percentage of severe and critical cases among hospital admissions, currently at 11%,” DOH added.

The agency warned people not to believe claims of a new COVID19 spike in Metro Manila, emphasizing the lack of official reports or evidence from health officials.

“The DOH urges the public to rely on information from reputable sources such as the agency and other official health organizations. Misinformation can contribute to unnecessary panic and fear.”

The Health Department cautioned that legal action could be taken if certain details continue to emerge.

Meanwhile, the DOH announced that starting Friday, January 5, Metro Manila’s hospitals will be on code white alert, readying for the Traslacion on January 9, 2024.

Medical teams and staff are on alert until January 11 to quickly admit and care for new patients in hospitals.

During key holidays or big events, the DOH often issues a code white alert to prepare for possible emergencies or widespread injuries.

The organization has stated it will station eight emergency squads with ambulances on the Traslacion pathway to aid worshippers with urgent medical care.

The groups will be positioned at these locations: Quirino Grandstand at the corner of Roxas Blvd and Ayala, National Museum of Fine Arts on Ayla Blvd at the corner of Taft, PNU on Ayala Blvd at San Marcelino intersection, San Sebastian Church, and, with Reachout Villarica, at Quezon Blvd near Quinta Market and Paterno.
