The first-ever “Asin Festival” is being celebrated to coincide with the town fiesta, which runs until February 21.

Mayor Noel Nacar described the process of making salt from sea water on “salt beds” with brick floors, where salt is dried and then scraped using a harrow in the afternoon. “It’s poetry in motion to watch the process,” he added.

Out of Dasol’s 18 barangays, eight are engaged in commercial salt production: Uli, Malacapas, Magsaysay, Bobonot, Poblacion, Gais-Guipe, Amalbalan and Hermosa.

Salt production starts by December until April, peaks during the summer months. But during rainy season the salt farm turns into fishponds.

Nacar said to have the best salt it must be produced during the hot days when the grains are finer and whiter.
