Increase in COVID-19 cases not only due to infection in NCR

ABS-CBN Data Analytics found that apart from the National Capital Region, other regions also contributed significantly to the country’s current swell of new COVID-19 cases.

In the past, as the number of COVID-19 cases has increased, more than half of the cases have come from Metro Manila.

But now, the inflation is due to the increase of cases in the NCR and elsewhere.

“One-fourth lang ‘yong share ng NCR sa national total… Nasa 24 or 25 percent. So this is really a battle on multiple fronts,” said Edson Guido, head of ABS-CBN Data Analytics.

According to ABS-CBN Data Analytics, the average number of new COVID-19 cases per day has reached 8,695 in the past week or from August 1 to 7.

Metro Manila receives 2,066 cases per day, which is also 62 percent higher than the number of cases in the last week of July.

There are 1,513 7-day daily average cases in Calabarzon, while 984 in Central Luzon. The numbers are also large in Central (914) and Western Visayas (615), and Northern Mindanao (527).

In Laguna, the number of active cases or illnesses has exceeded 3,000.

Public hospitals are also filling up, according to Governor Ramil Hernandez.

Quezon City, Cebu, Ilocos Norte, Cebu City, Manila, Pampanga, Rizal, Aklan, Bukidnon, Makati, Davao City, and Cagayan de Oro are some of the other provinces and highly-urbanized cities with high cases in the first week of August.

As of Saturday, there were more than 11,000 new cases.

Guido said he sees that more cases will be raised, especially since enhanced community quarantine has just begun in some areas and the lockdown effects have not yet been felt.

According to Dr. Jaime Almora, the Philippine Hospital Association president, public and private hospitals are also filling up in NCR.

Doctors and nurses are also running out.

The National Kidney and Transplant Institute in Quezon City has announced that only emergency and urgent renal cases will be accepted after filling the emergency room due to COVID-19 and leptospirosis cases.
