Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag has confirmed that high-profile convicted drug lord Vicente Sy died of a heart attack on Thursday.

Before his death, Chaclag said Sy was rushed to the Philippine Marine Naval Hospital on July 27 due to difficulty in breathing. He was given emergency treatment and hooked with oxygen inhalation.

Vicente Sy was returned to his detention cell with prescribed medicines, Chaclag said.

However, on July 29, doctors from the New Bilibid Prison found SY has suffered from a stroke.

The drug convict suffered several seizures while still at Fort Bonifacio, but doctors could revive him.

Vicente Sy testified against detained Senator Leila de Lima over her drug-related charges. The high-profile inmate allegedly gave P500,000 to De Lima’s campaign in 2012.

However, he later retracted his statements against De Lima.

“Si Vicente Sy ay tumestigo noon at sinabi niya na nag-ambag daw siya ng halagang P500,000 para daw sa kampanya ni Senator De Lima… Pero sa aming pagtatanong kanina, sinabi niya na kailanman ay hindi siya nagbigay ng pera kay Senator De Lima at sinabi rin niya na hindi niya kilala si De Lima,” said De Lima’s lawyer, Boni Tacardon, in 2012.

In July 2020, Jaybee Sebastian, another drug convict involved in De Lima’s case, died of COVID-19 also in Bilibid.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II accused Sebastian of running a three-year funding campaign to support de Lima’s senatorial bid in 2016 in exchange for their continuous drug operation inside NBP.
