BSP to punish man who burned P20 paper bill in Tiktok video

The Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) wants a netizen to be held accountable for the burning of P20 paper in a Tiktok video.

In a report by Joseph Morong on GMA News “24 Oras” on Wednesday, the BSP said that what TikToker did to burn the money was in violation of Presidential Decree No. 247, or the law prohibiting checking and writing money:

“1. That it shall be unlawful for any person to willfully deface, mutilate, tear, burn or destroy, in any manner whatsoever, currency notes and coins issued by the Central Bank of the Philippines; and

2. That any person who shall violate this Decree shall, upon conviction, be punished by a fine of not more than twenty thousand pesos and/or by imprisonment of not more than five years.”

Those found guilty will face a fine of not more than P20,000 or imprisonment of not more than five years.

“’Yung corresponding banknote at ‘yung coin ay pagmamay-ari ng Republika ng Pilipinas. Naka-receive siya ng maraming backlash from the public (kaya) pi-null-out niya agad,” said Atty. Mark Fajardo, Senior Investigation Officer of BSP.

(The corresponding banknote and the coin belong to the Republic of the Philippines. He received a lot of backlash from the public (so) he pulled out immediately.)

The whereabouts and identity of the netizen have allegedly been determined.

“Napagtagni-tagni po in terms of the location, the whereabouts, kung saan siya nakatira at ‘yung identity ng tao. And may mga validations po na ginagawa,” said Dickenson Gamalo of BSP-Quezon City.

(It is detailed in terms of the location, the whereabouts, where he lives, and the person’s identity. And validations are being done.)
Aside from violating PD 247, the man will also face complaints of violation of RA 154 of the revised penal code or unlawful use of means of publication and illegal utterances and the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2022.

“Kahit sa social media maaari tayong makapag-commit ng mga ganitong violations. Wala po kayong takas,” said Gamalo.

(Even on social media, we can commit such violations. You have no escape.)
