The British Columbia government will open a new trade and investment office in the Philippines as part of its ongoing drive to step-up its trade in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Philippine consulate general in Vancouver said that Suzanne Anton, British Columbia Minister of Justice and Attorney General, announced this week that they will open the office this year.

Ms Anton said British Columbia chose Manila as the site of the new office because of the Philippine’s rapid economic growth and the growing trade between British Columbia and the Philippines.

“A presence in ASEAN will put British Columbia on the doorstep of an economy that is valued at $2.4 trillion and has annual growth forecasts above five percent for the next five years,” Anton said, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The trade office will be the twelfth office established by the Canadian province – other offices are located in the United States, Europe, Japan, China, Korea and India.

Consul General Neil Frank Ferrer of the Philippine consulate general in Vancouver said the country’s decision is “a vote of confidence in the Philippine economy and business environment.”
