Bongbong Marcos to run for president if support is enough

Former Senator Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. said he would run for president in the 2022 elections if he has enough support.

“It is the usual [circumstances]. If there is a support for you, you have a vice president, senators, governors, mayors [who will support and run alongside you], you look at that,” Marcos said during the Laging Handa briefing.

“Alliances have also become very important, and so I tend to go to grassroots, talk to the leaders. Mataas ka sa survey, titignan mo, totoo ba ‘yan? Kailangan alamin mo sa local leaders,” Bongbing Marcos added.

(Yes, you rank high in surveys, and then you check if that is the truth on the ground by talking to local leaders.)

Marcos added it is difficult to decide on running for the 2022 elections for now because there are so many uncertainties.

“If you have all of that (top level and grassroots support) and there is a way to win, you can run. Until that is clear, it would be premature to make a decision,” Marcos said.

“The filing of candidacy is still in October,” he added.

Bongbong Marcos has already met with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, who led the latest survey.

Manila Mayor Francisco Isko Moreno [14%], former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. followed. [13%], and Senator Grace Poe [10%].

In January 2020, Marcos confirmed his plans to run for a national post in the year 2022.

“My plan is I will be a candidate next election,” he then said at a news forum hosted by the National Press Club. “For what, we still have to decide.”

He said he listened to the advice of former senator and   and the example of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

But I will not forget the advice of [former] Sen. Manny Villar after [he lost] the election: don’t make the same mistake I did of announcing my bid early,” Bongbong Marcos said in a mix of English and Filipino.

He added: “Whatever it is, I will enter a national campaign.”
