Bong Go hints changes in VP bid, says politics is ‘dirty’

Vice presidential candidate Senator Bong Go hinted that there would be changes in his 2022 election plans due to President Rodrigo Duterte’s request.

“Itong kandidatura ko bilang bise presidente ay maaring magbago. ‘Di maiwasan ‘yung mga changes sa pulitika – na, sabi ko nga, napakadumi. Dito ko na gusto ko magserbisyo sa kapwa kong Pilipino eh merong mga pagbabago pero wala naman akong magagawa,” Go said in a Malasakit Center event on Tuesday, November 9.

(My candidacy for vice president may change. We can’t prevent changes in politics – that, as I said, is very dirty. I want to serve my countrymen in this capacity, but there will be changes, and I can’t do anything about it.)

He added, “Dahil sa kagustuhan ng ating mahal na Pangulo, kailangan kong umiwas. Malalaman ‘nyo lang po ‘yan sa darating na araw.” (Because this is the President’s wish, I need to change courses. You will know it in the coming days.)

Bong Go made the announcement on the same day that Davao City  Duterte-Carpio withdrew her reelection bid.

Inday Sara made a move just six days before the deadline set by the Commission on Elections for the substitution of candidates for the 2022 elections.

“This afternoon, I withdrew my candidacy for Davao City mayor,” Duterte-Carpio said in Filipino on her Facebook page.

She added her brother, Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte will be running for mayor. Baste withdrew his candidacy Tuesday morning as advised by his sister.

Sara Duterte did not detail the reasons for her withdrawal. “This is all for now,” she said.

In June 2020,  President Rodrigo Duterte considered Davao City Mayor  and Senator Bong Go for his successor.

Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Tesoro Go previously served in President Rodrigo Duterte’s Cabinet as Special Assistant to the President and Head of the Presidential Management Staff from June 2016 to October 2018. Go had served as the personal aide and special assistant to Duterte since 1998, back when Duterte was still mayor of Davao City.

Go filed his certificate of candidacy to run for vice president on October 2, 2021.
