Black Nazarene devotees file complain vs. Pura Luka Vega

Hijos Del Nazareno (HDN) Central drag artist Pura Luka Vega has filed a complaint with the Manila Prosecutor’s Office for her controversial performance dressed as a saint and playing a rock remix of “Ama Namin.”

In a nine-page complaint by HDN Central, devotees of the Black Nazarene, they accused Pura of violating Article 201(2)(b)(3) and 201(2)(3)(5), in relation to Section 6 , of the Revised Penal Code and Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Respondents to the complaint include the owner of the establishment where Pura performed and those with him as co-performers.

“Pura Luka Vega’s acts and actions constitute a direct attack on our Lord, our God and savior, Jesus Christ. His acts cut painfully deep right into the core of our faith and belief, painfully wounding us spiritually, morally, and mentally,” according to the group’s complaint.

According to the group, based on the social media accounts of Pura and other netizens, the drag artist has been imitating Jesus Christ since 2021.

In Pura’s previous statements, he said that he did not intend to insult religion in his presentation.

He also defended freedom of expression and the arts.

According to HDN Central’s complaint, Pura remains “unrepentant and unapologetic” for what he did.

“As much as Pura Luka Vega enjoys the freedom of artistic expression, he has the correlative duty as a citizen to obey the law and to act within the bounds of the laws,” said the group.

The group also clarified that their complaint against Pura was not an attack on the LGBTQIA+ community and artistic freedom.

“Ang usapin po dito ay ang paglapastangan sa ating Panginoon at sa ating paniniwala bilang mga Kristyano. Bilang isang demokratikong bayan na naniniwala sa kahalagahan ng karapatan at kalayaan, dapat ay walang natatapakang iba,” they explained.

Before this, Pura was declared persona non grata in Manila, General Santos City, Floridablanca in Pampanga, and Toboso in Negros Occidental, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, and Cagayan De Oro.
