BIR demands Marcos family to pay tax debts

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) announced that they sent a demand letter last year to the family of the late former President Ferdinand Marcos regarding their tax debt amounting to P203.819 billion.

In a letter shared by the Aksyon Demokratiko party, BIR Commissioner Caesar Dulay said, “BIR did send a written demand to the Marcos heirs on December 02, 2021, regarding their tax liabilities.”

Earlier, Aksyon Demokratiko chairman Ernesto Ramel asked the BIR to demand once again that the Marcos family pay their tax debt.

He said the family should be sent a letter at least once every five years.

Dulay responded to Ramel’s letter a few days after the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) denied the Marcos camp’s statement that the two agencies were still discussing the family’s tax obligation.

“Malinaw na ngayon,” Ramel said in a message sent to reporters.

According to Ramel, former Senator Bongbong Marcos Jr. will continue to avoid paying the family’s multi-billion debt to the BIR.

Last week, Marcos’ spokesman Atty. Victor Rodriguez said the PCGG contacted the BIR regarding such tax levied on the Marcoses.

Rodriguez also revealed that properties allegedly with tax problems are still being heard.

Meanwhile, retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio called Marcos’ camp’s statement that the BIR and PCGG have an agreement on the estate tax claim on the family ridiculous.

Carpio also asserted that the decision in the case is final based on the SC’s decision.
