BI main office in Intramuros closes for 2-day disinfection

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is closing its main office in Intramuros, Manila this Monday and Tuesday to give way to disinfection of the building amid the recent upsurge in Covid-19 cases in Metro Manila.

In an advisory, Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said transactions at the Bureau’s main office in Intramuros are temporarily suspended during the two-day period as he ordered a “thorough sanitation and disinfection” of the entire building and its premises.

BI officials and employees were also ordered to stay home, although a skeletal force of personnel will still be on duty to man the agency’s 24/7 offices rendering critical support services as well as to provide security.

Morente thus advised the transacting public to instead conduct business at other BI offices in Metro Manila, such as the BI SM North Satellite Office and the BI SM Aura Satellite Office, among others.

Persons with confirmed schedules via the bureau’s online appointment system for Monday and Tuesday were advised to reschedule their appointments when operations at the main office resume on Wednesday.

Morente urged the public to always check the bureau’s website at www.immigration.gov.ph and its social media accounts for the list of BI offices, as well as further announcements and advisories.

Regular operations will resume on Wednesday, 17 March 2020.

BI earlier ordered its rank and file employees to strictly observe health protocols amidst the recent upsurge of Covid-19 cases in the country.

A memorandum issued by Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente directed the bureau’s employees, especially personnel assigned at the ports and those rendering frontline services in offices, to ensure the proper wearing of face masks and face shields while on duty.

Morente said employees who disobey the directive by not following health protocols will be investigated and meted appropriate disciplinary actions.
