BI detention agents foil shabu smuggle try

Agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) foiled on an attempt by a Korean national to sneak illegal drugs into the detention center in Bicutan, Taguig City last September 21.

Adolfo Marasigan, officer-in-charge of the BI’s Warden Facility, said their custodial guards intercepted a package containing four grams of suspected shabu delivered for detained foreigner Yang Heejun, 41.

According to him, the illegal substance was found wrapped in plastic inside a kimchi container, together with other food supplies.

“Our agents started to be wary when Yang became very insistent in getting the package at once, without undergoing the standard inspection,” added Marasigan.

Immigration Commissioner Norman G. Tansingco, meanwhile, disclosed that Yang was originally arrested last April 18 in Angeles City, Pampanga as he is the subject of an outstanding warrant of arrest for stealing 14.15 million won, and is wanted for special larceny and destruction and damage of property in Seoul, South Korea.

“Being a fugitive from justice, Yang poses risk to public safety and security. He was charged with being an undesirable alien, and shall be deported to face charges in his country,” the BI Chief added.

Yang is currently being held by authorities while he faces a case for violation of Republic Act no. 9165, or violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002.

Tansingco clarified, however, that Yang will be criminally charged and prosecuted in court, and, if convicted, shall serve his sentence in the Philippines first before he can be deported.

Tansingco then said that the incident was not the first time BI agents has confiscated illegal items in the detention center.

“The BI will remain vigilant and continue to be strict in performing inspections while investigations are ongoing,” Tansingco further assured.

Last month, American passenger found carrying more than P19-million worth of cocaine was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

The arrested passenger was identified as Stephen Jozeph Szuhar, 75, who flew in at around 8 p.m. from Sao Paolo, Brazil on board a connecting Qatar Airways flight.

The BI’s Anti-Terrorist Group assigned at the NAIA immediately coordinated the matter to the NAIA Drug Interdiction Task Group, of which the BI is a member.
