Almost all regions in PH gave wage increase

Almost all regions in the Philippines have already provided an increase in the daily wage of workers.

Based on the latest report of the Department of Labor and Employment, here are the regions that have already implemented a minimum wage increase:

  • National Capital Region (NCR) – P33 effective June 4
  • Ilocos Region – P60 to P90 to be divided into 2 to 3 tranches starting June 6
  • Cagayan Valley – P50 to P75 to be divided into 2 to 3 tranches starting June 10
  • Mimaropa – P35 effective from June 10
  • Western Visayas – P40 effective June 5
  • Soccsksargen – P32 to be divided into two tranches on June 9 and September 1
  • Caraga – P30 effective from June 6 (Divided into 2 tranches for Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte)

Here are the scheduled increases in other regions:

  • Cordillera Administrative Region – P50 to P60 to be divided into two tranches on June 14 and January 1, 2023
  • Central Visayas – P53 starting June 14
  • Bicol Region – P55 to be divided into two tranches on June 18 and December 1
  • Northern Mindanao – P40 to P47 to be divided into two tranches on June 18 and December 16
  • Davao Region – P47 to be divided into 2 to 3 tranches starting June 19

He said the wage order in other regions has also been approved and only needs to be published 15 days before it can be implemented.

The wage board does not cover the Bangsamoro because it has its own wage-setting system.

There are 11 regional installments providing the increase, which is considered a problem by the research and advocacy group IBON Foundation.

It is said that with the speed of increase in the price of oil and commodities, wages have been left to fall by 10 percent since 2016.

The group’s account also shows that based on the 5.4 percent inflation rate in May, more than P1,000 per day can be considered a “living wage” for a family.

According to the National Wages and Productivity Commission, wage boards consider pandemics and disasters’ impact.

He said the wage increase also has an effect on inflation.

It is said that companies affected by pandemic or calamity have 75 days to apply for a 1-year exemption from paying the increase, as long as they have a document to prove it.
