Agaton death toll climbs to 179 – OCD 8

SRR efforts in several landslide-affected regions of Baybay City, Leyte, have been halted to ensure the safety of rescuers, according to a disaster official in the area.

SRR activities in barangays Mailhi and Bunga have been ended, according to Lord Byron Torrecarion, regional director of the Office of Civil Defense in Region 8.

“For Baybay, there is a termination of SRR ops in Mailhi ang Bunga. But there will be a continuation of SRR ops in [Barangay] Kantagnos,” he said.

Tropical Storm Agaton, which wreaked havoc on several parts of the Visayas last week, hit Baybay City particularly hard.

SRR operations in Abuyog, Leyte, will be suspended on Wednesday, according to Torrecarion.

“Today, magko-continue pa po yung SRR natin [SRR operations will continue]. It will be the last day today for Abuyog,” he said.

Divers from the Navy checked the shoreline of the incident area in Abuyog on Monday, according to Torrecarion, but found no casualties. On Wednesday, the divers would check the coastline once more.

According to Torrecarion, 104 persons are still missing according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

At 4:50 a.m., Torrecarion stated on Tuesday that 179 people had died due to Agaton.

“As for the casualty, the most recent, updated early this morning around 4:50, we have 156 casualties as reported by the management of the dead cluster and 179 as reported by the IMT (Incident Management Team),” he said.

According to Torrecarion, 120 fatalities were reported in Baybay City, 56 in Abuyog, and three in other regions.

Only 156 of the 179 total victims have been recognized thus far, according to Torrecarion.

According to him, the Baybay City government has declared Barangay Kantagnos unfit for human occupancy. Meanwhile, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Abuyog has identified three prone locations to landslides.

In the meantime, it’s 8 a.m. According to a report released on Tuesday by the NDRRMC, the death toll has risen to 175, with 110 people still missing and eight people injured.

According to the NDRRMC, 156 people died in Eastern Visayas, 14 in Western Visayas, three in Davao Region, and two in Central Visayas.

According to the NDRRMC, only 15 deaths, six missing persons, and six injured people have been verified.

Agaton afflicted a total of 2,079,375 people, or 599,616 families, in 2,423 barangays across Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao, Soccsksargen, Caraga, and Bangsamoro.
