Military nurse stabbed to death by cellphone thief

A nurse at a military hospital was killed by a thief who tried to steal her cellphone in Makati City yesterday afternoon.

The victim was identified as 2nd Lt. Jennett Beron Aguilar, 31, a nurse at AFP Medical Center. Aguilar died before arriving at the Makati Hospital for two stab wounds.

According to the report, the victim just got home at Phil. Army Village Homeowners Association Inc. (PAVAHAI) in Brgy. Comembo at 1:30 am.

The military nurse went outside when she heard noises, and there she saw the suspect John Brosas, 19, cons­truction worker who tried to steal her cellphone.

The victim struggled and fought back and was stabbed twice.

Aguilar was immediately rushed to the hospital but did not make it alive.

Brosas was arrested at a vacant lot near the construction site where he worked.

It was discovered that Brosas even cleaned the victim’s car on several occasions where he received money.

The suspect said he only wanted to buy something for his birthday yesterday, so he attempted to steal the victim’s cellphone.

The robbery-homicide case is being prepared against the suspect.

Military vs. Abu Sayyaf in Sulu, 8 soldiers injured

Eight soldiers were injured after an encounter with 40 members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Patikul, Sulu.

According to a Western Mindanao Command statement, the clash broke out between the Joint Task Force Sulu and Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan’s group and Radullan Sahiron on Thursday.

It is not known how many casualties the Abu Sayyaf Group had because of the encounter with the military in Sulu.

The wounded soldiers are being treated at Camp Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital in Busbus, Sulu.

WesMinCom Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana saluted the soldiers for their dedication to ensuring the security of the country.

“I salute our gallant soldiers for their bravery and utmost dedication to their sworn duty,” said Sobejana.

Sobejana assured the public that the military would continue to strengthen its operation against terrorists in Sulu and other provinces under WesMinCom‘s control.

Police kills self by accident while cleaning gun

A police killed himself and injured his brother by accident after his gun fired while he was cleaning it inside his home in Narra town, Palawan, Tuesday night.

Police Lt. Col. Socrates Faltado, spokesman of Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) Police identified the victim as Police Corporal Melvin Castillo Rios, 37, assigned in Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU) in Palawan. Rios’ brother, Roderick, 39, a welder, was rushed to the nearest hospital.

The incident happened at the police’s house at Purok 3, Brgy. Princess Urduja, Narra of the said province. Rios was cleaning his service firearm as his brother watched when the gun fired by accident.

Faltado said the victim was shot in his temple while his brother suffered a gunshot wound to the chin.

The victims were rushed to the hospital, but the cop was declared dead-on-arrival.

DOLE reminds employers in giving 13th month pay

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reminded the employers about giving their employees the 13th month pay.

In a Radyo Inquirer interview, DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III, the 13th month pay was mandated by law, and it should be given to workers before Christmas.

Some employers have already paid half of their employees’ 13th month pay.

Those in government will receive their 13th month pay tomorrow, Friday (Nov. 15).

Even employees who have resigned or been laid off this year are entitled to receive a 13th month pay.

L300 van fell in Benguet ravine, 6 passengers survive

Six people, including a six-year-old child aboard an L-300 van, survived after the vehicle fell into a 50-meter deep ravine Kibungan, Benguet.

The accident happened in Sitio Tigil, Barangay Sagpat, as the van was heading to Baguio city on Tuesday morning.

The six passengers who survived the Benguet ravine accident were identified as Samuel Dolin, 46; Butch Dolin; Susan Landisan, 56; Leomy William; Angelo Landisan, 6; and Dario De Lara, 32.

The six were taken to the Rural Health Unit before being transferred to Benguet General Hospital in La Trinidad.
