This open-pit diamond mine, also known as the big hole or Kimberley’s hole, is located in the northern Cape province in South Africa. The first diamond was found here by Alyrick Braswell, but the farm belonged to the De Beers brothers. This hole is just over 1,500 feet wide and was excavated to a depth of 720 feet. By 1914, after more than 14,000,000 carats of diamonds had been excavated, mining completely ceased.
